Marbelous Wood Refraction will be exhibited at MindCraft13 exhibition during the Milan Design Week 2013. Marbelous Wood – Refraction is part of a larger series entitled Marbelous Wood, which is a series of wood adorned with a marbling pattern, a technique known from old book covers. The floor is the largest wooden surface in Scandinavian homes. Marbelous Wood reinterprets this classic domestic feature with vibrating colours across its surface. In Marbelous Wood – Refraction, both the form of the parquet floor and the applied pattern are inspired by the refraction of light through a prism, a graduating colour scale from one colour to the next. Its highly organic yet graphic patterning creates an optical experience as your feet move across the floor. The transparent marbling pattern merges with the wood, entering into a dialogue with the inherent ornamentation of wood. Marbelous Wood tells a story about time. Each print captures a unique frozen moment within the process. Produced one drop of colour after another, ring by ring, the pattern is constructed on the water surface. The final result is a reflection of the annual rings of wood. The hand-decorated wood panels also tell a story about the process of marbling, rendering the traditional craft three-dimensional and capable of covering a space. Marbelous Wood is not representational of wood; it is the dream of wood, a supernatural wood. Like reading a book and dreaming away to another place, escaping to the colourful forest cabin. Patterns are created using the traditional aqueous surface design technique of marbling, traditionally a technique from bookbinding, which has been re-purposed and turned into a three-dimensional surface for interior design purposes. Marbelous Wood reinterprets this classic domestic feature with vibrating colours across its surface. Marbelous Wood is a wood floor decorated with a marbling technique. The pattern reflects the growth ring patterns in the natural wood, and the unique ornamentation of the wood is perceived with renewed visual intensity. The ornamentation of the wood itself has been enlarged and intensified. The wooden planks are made one by one, and thus each floor board acquires a unique pattern of coloured stripes. Pernille Snedker Hansen has combined the traditions of marbling from the bookbinding profession with the traditional Scandinavian pinewood floor, creating a wooden floor that forms a never-ending array of details and colour combinations at one’s feet.  Pernille Snedker Hansen started the design studio in 2009 and has been developing innovative surfaces at her studio and at artist residencies. Process is an important factor in Pernille’s method of working. She uses nature as a collaborator both in process and inspiration. Her main drive is to challenge how we look and experience the surfaces that build up our environments. She wants to make people curious and enjoy the visual treasures in the details and unexpected materials.
